IFCPP Protection Tip of the Month
Secure Doors Every Time
Every Unlocked Door Is an Invitation
One of the simplest—and most effective—ways to protect people, collections, and facilities is to ensure that every secure door is closed and locked when it should be. Whether it's a collections storage room, staff office, loading dock, or emergency exit, an unsecured door can provide an opportunity for theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, or safety incidents.
It's easy to assume someone else checked the door or that you'll "only be gone for a minute." Unfortunately, many security breaches begin with these small moments of convenience. Every staff member, volunteer, contractor, and security officer plays a vital role in maintaining the security of your institution.
Taking just a few extra seconds to verify that a door has fully closed and latched can prevent costly incidents and help safeguard irreplaceable cultural resources.
Best Practices
Never prop open secure doors unless authorized for operational purposes.
Confirm that doors fully close and latch behind you every time.
Report doors that do not lock, latch, or close properly so they can be repaired promptly.
Politely challenge unfamiliar individuals in restricted areas or notify security personnel if something doesn't seem right.
Ensure loading docks, storage areas, and staff entrances are secured immediately after deliveries or service visits.
Professional Tip
Security isn't just about keeping unauthorized people out—it's about ensuring only authorized individuals have access to the right spaces at the right time. A securely closed door is one of the simplest and most effective barriers protecting your people, collections, and mission.
