    The MAP application deadline is February 15, 2025.

    1. Confirm your museum is eligible to participate.
    2. Review MAP costs, process and schedule and ensure your museum has the time, resources, capacity, and buy-in to undertake an assessment.
    3. Choose your Assessment Type and verify that you meet any special additional eligibility requirements.
    4. Read the Application FAQs and use the links included to download the Sample Application to use for planning and drafting your response to application questions.
    5. The Application FAQs also include access to the online application form. You will enter your contact information and then receive a link to the full online application via email. You will then be able to complete sections of the application, save them, and then return to the application later by clicking the “Save” button available at the bottom of each page. By clicking this button, you will be able to save your information and receive a unique link to return to that page in the application later to finish it. After submitting a completed application, you will receive a confirmation email. If you have any difficulties completing the application, please contact MAP staff at map@aam-us.org or 202-289-9118. 
    6. Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2025. 
    7. Look for an email notification of acceptance status 30-45 days after the application deadline.

Content provenance solutions aim to establish the lineage of media, including its source and editing history over time.

    Of these solutions, Content Credentials™ are a provenance solution that uses cryptographically signed metadata describing the provenance of media. This metadata can be attached to the media content during export from software or even at creation on hardware.

    This cybersecurity information sheet, Content Credentials: Strengthening Multimedia Integrity in the Generative AI Era, authored by the National Security Agency (NSA), Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASD’s ACSC), Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS), and United Kingdom National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-UK), discusses how Content Credentials can provide transparency for the provenance of media, raises awareness of the state of this solution, introduces recommended practices to preserve provenance information, and emphasizes the importance of widespread adoption across the information ecosystem.

    FEMA is hosting two sessions of a 1-hour webinar on the Response Inventory System (RIS), National Resource Hub: From Chaos to Coordination: The RIS Advantage in Disaster Preparedness

    Resource management is the cornerstone of preparing for and responding to incidents that require mutual aid among agencies and jurisdictions.

    The webinar will cover the basic capabilities and functions of RIS. Participants will learn:

    • The benefits of using RIS before, during, and after a disaster.
    • RIS’s role in the resource management process.
    • How to use RIS to type, inventory, and prepare resources ahead of a disaster.
    • How to use RIS when responding to a disaster.

    There will be a live demonstration of how to use RIS, and participants will be able to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

    For more than a decade, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been reporting on the state of national preparedness to identify the risks and opportunities that inform emergency management decision-making.

    FEMA’s 2024 National Preparedness Report provides a data-driven picture of national preparedness and emergency management trends. It offers all levels of government, tribes, the private and nonprofit sectors, and the public practical insights to inform decisions about program priorities, resource allocations and actions that can create more resilient communities.

    This year, the report places particular emphasis on four core capabilities: Mass Care Services, Public Information and Warning, Infrastructure Systems, and Cybersecurity. These areas continue to present significant challenges, but also opportunities for enhancing national resilience.

    The analysis presented in the report identified several key takeaways:

    • Disasters are becoming costlier and deadlier.
    • Sophisticated data analysis tools are essential to develop effective, place-based recovery strategies.
    • Individuals and households are taking disaster preparedness more seriously and improving their risk literacy.
    • Decaying legacy infrastructure and outdated building codes continue to pose a significant vulnerability nationwide for the foreseeable future.
    • The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology allows determined adversaries to strike harder and with less warning.
    • Risk and resilience across the nation is evolving, but not uniformly. National assessments enhance our understanding of evolving risk and resilience challenges for disadvantaged communities.

    What do you do when you need a new idea or a mental break?

    My inspiration and relaxation both are maximized by the same activity – taking a walk. That is where I often get ideas for my writing and speeches. It also helps alleviate stress.

    Harvard Medicine reports that many doctors are prescribing time outdoors for their patients.

    The National Park Service suggests that even just 5 minutes walking in nature improves mood, self-esteem, and relaxation.

    While I find nature wonderfully inspiring, you certainly don’t have to walk in the woods to claim these benefits.

    John Bowers, the Chief Executive Officer for a large law firm, is a friend and recent client. For much of his 25-year career, John has taken the stairs to his office. Since he works in a metropolitan area, his morning walk is taking 15 flights of stairs. He uses that time to think about his day and what he needs to accomplish.

    Moving your legs puts your brain into a creative and relaxed state, increasing your mental focus and releasing stress from your entire body.

    A necessary part of our lives may be spent in urban environments or in an office all day. Both can be very mentally taxing, affecting our mindset, productivity, and our mental well-being. This makes it increasingly important to force us to do what we may not think that we have time to do.

    New innovations and ideas don’t usually occur without allowing a break for our brain and body.

    Chances are, you drive to work. Consider parking several blocks away or even in a parking space furthest from your office. Then walk to and from your car. During your lunch break, eat at your desk at least a few days a week and then go for a walk. Schedule your meetings at coffee shops within walking distance. While I like the solitude of walking, you might also consider having a meeting while taking a walk. And you can always be like my friend John and skip the elevator.

    Removing yourself from your typical work environment to take an intentional pause can benefit problem solving, approaching a difficult conversation, searching for a creative idea, or just having a mental break from your routine.

    Going out of your way to take a slower, longer route might be exactly what your mind and body need. Who knows what inspiration or calming affect will transpire.

    Pause to take a walk.

    It’s obvious to spot natural talent. But what usually isn’t so obvious is the hours of the training or education, the dedication to skill development, the mental toughness to repeatedly push through failure and learn from it, and the insightful advice and challenge of a good coach. Let’s zero in on that one—the importance of a good coach. One of the benefits of having a coach is that they can see blind spots that need improvement. They recognize talent and help to develop that talent with instruction and encouragement. I had a lot of coaching starting early in life. The most significant coaching I received as a young teen was from my mother when I competed in a speech contest. She helped me develop my presentation skills, scheduled practice sessions in front of her friends, and offered ongoing encouragement.

    I won the speech competition and found my calling.

    All because of my coach.

    That is why coaching is so valuable.

    Even if you are established in your career, the benefits of good coaching should still be a consideration for your success and the success of others.

    Here three primary coaching possibilities that can help further your career and build your skillset:

    • Join or form a peer-to-peer coaching group—a mastermind gathering. I have participated in at least four formal mastermind groups over my years in professional speaking. In addition, I have regularly hosted “roaming” mastermind groups at Influence – the National Speakers Association annual convention.
    • Hire a coach for one on one or group training or consultation. Find the best in the industry and get them to coach you. Investing in a good coach is a force multiplier and could result in income growth, promotions, and personal success.
    • Be a coach. There are few experiences in life more fulfilling than passing on life experiences, teaching others about your failures and the lessons learned, and supporting and encouraging others in their journey. The instruction and mentoring you provide, could make a profound difference while changing the trajectory for others.

    Whether you are on the giving or receiving end, there is much to gain from coaching. Experience growth. Share your journey. Grow your career. Find a coach. Be a coach.

    Have you ever had one of the following experiences?

    • Boarding a flight on a plane where your assigned seat is a middle seat and then finding your row entirely empty.
    • Pulling into a downtown parking space where you notice there’s a lot of time left on the meter.
    • Shuffling through that kitchen drawer and finding a forgotten gift card.
    • Putting your hands in the pocket of a pair of jeans you haven’t worn in a while and finding unexpected money in your pocket.

    We’ve all had positive, unexpected things happen to us before. My most recent “finding a wad of cash” made my day.

    Here’s what happened.

    A client who I worked with late last year emailed me to tell me that I hadn’t cashed the check from a late year speaking engagement. Indeed, the undeposited check was in my desk drawer, placed there during a very busy season. She had no idea that her simple communication would make my day.

    This experience was a reminder about how our actions and words, particularly when unexpected, can make a huge impact on others. They can turn around a negative situation into a positive one or even change the trajectory of someone’s life.

    Last week, I had a conversation with a client who had attended a conference where I had presented more than 15 years ago. He told me that his organization had benefited greatly from the presentation and cited specific benefits from my training.

    He told me this story:

    One of my staff members was underperforming. In fact, due to his poor performance, he was about to be fired. As I was thinking about how to have that difficult conversation, I thought back to a point you made in your presentation. I thought about the skillsets he had which were not utilized in his current position. That job wasn’t a good fit for him. I reassigned him to another position, one that complimented his natural talents. It didn’t take long for both of us to realize that he would excel in his new job. Eventually, he became one of the biggest superstars in our organization. It’s not uncommon for our customers to bring him coffee or doughnuts on occasion to thank him for the work he does. They love how passionately he performs his duties and the incredible energy he brings to work each day. 

    My message from that 2010 presentation was this: Everybody has value. Excellent leaders identify the best traits on his or her team and figure out how to use them to the greatest benefit of the individual AND the organization.

    If you are a leader and you aren’t doing that, you aren’t doing your job. Good leaders bring out the best in others. They look for unexpected opportunities to communicate encouragement and positive support. They regularly assess the needs of their organization and help their teams reach their full potential. They continuously look for ways to provide “a wad of cash in your pocket” experience for those around them and they repeat those moments frequently.
